New iPhone App - QuikTap Words - A Sight Vocabulary Game

To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” Victor Hugo

Wouldn’t it be great to give your child a head start with his or her reading skills?

Educators agree that learning the Dolsch Sight Words is a mandatory step in making fluent readers. These sight words make up 60% or more of the words used in classroom books, and educators agree that they should be learned by sight and not by phonics (as many of the word cannot be sounded out). It’s a fact that children who master the sight words make better readers whether English is their first language or if they are English language learners (ELL).  Reading is a fundamental skill for a child to be successful in school.

If you read a lot of books you are considered well read. But if you watch a lot of TV, you're not considered well viewed.” Lily Tomlin

QuikTap Words is a fun game aimed at making better readers by allowing children to play continuously with the highly regarded Dolsch Sight Words that are grouped by grades preK, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade. It is a game that can be played by young preschoolers, by the older 3rd graders, or by a child of any age who needs practice or is struggling with his or her reading skills.

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." Jacqueline Kennedy

Could the new Nook eReader be a game changer?

This could be a game changer. This new upgrade is running google’s Android.  It’s an ereader, a browser & has some game capabilities. With android it has the power under the hood to be a full functioned tablet computer.

The ereader just might morph into a tablet computer at a price point much lower than the ipad.

ipad beware?!?!

A quote on features - "The Nookcolor can be used for reading digital books, magazines, newspapers and children's books. It ups the competition for e-readers by including functions common to more expensive tablet computers such as Apple's iPad with features such as games, music, Web browsing and its own application store. It runs on Google Inc.'s Android operating system."

QuikTap Words - Sight Vocabulary app in development

Did you know that there is a list of sight vocabulary words first developed by Dr. Edwin William Dolch.  Our new app QuikTap Words will teach Dolch Words in a fun way.

Following is from the Wikipedia page, "Dolch Word List":

"The Dolch Word List is a list of frequently used words compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. The list was prepared in 1936. The list was originally published in his book Problems in Reading in 1948. Under the copyright laws in effect during the time of publication, the Dolch word list is out of copyright.

"Dolch compiled the list based on children's books of his era. The list contains 220 "service words" that have to be easily recognized in order to achieve reading fluency in English. The compilation excludes nouns, which comprise a separate 95-word list.

"Many of the 220 Dolch words can’t be “sounded out” using common sound-to-letter implicit phonics patterns and have to be learned by sight; hence the alternative term, “sight word." Although the list is divided into grades, for native English speakers, all the words in the Dolch should be mastered by the end of 1st grade.

According to Wikipedia, Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in The Hat" was commissioned to be written using Dolch words:

"Houghton Mifflin asked Theodor Geisel to write and illustrate a children's primer using only 225 "new-reader" vocabulary words. The result of that challenge was "The Cat In The Hat."[citation needed] More recently, the new line of TOON Books, innovative graphic early readers, has been using Dolch words in their comics by top authors and cartoonists, and three of the TOON Books have received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award from the ALA, given to "the most distinguished American book for beginning readers ..."
